The Huron County Nature
Center was founded in 1990. The Huron County
Board of Commissioners established a 280 acre nature center in
Hume Township on property owned by the County since 1941. This
tract, includes the 120 acre wilderness arboretum, that has
been under the care of the Huron County Women's Clubs for more
than 50 years.
In the past few years we have added handicap
accessible trails, built a beautiful pavilion, added
restrooms, and maintained the many walking trails which run
through the wilderness.
Wilderness
Arboretum
A Wilderness Arboretum is a place where plants,
birds, insects, mammals, fungi-all things living or dead-are
protected for scientific and educational purposes and for
preservation of natural conditions. This tract of alternating
sand ridges and shallow swales is a haven for nature lovers
and environmentalists. Enjoy a refreshing walk along one of
the well kept trails in the nature center.
New Building Is Ready For
Use!
After years of planning the board
of directors have announced that a new educational
building has now been placed at the Huron County
Nature Center.
The building is a 2500 square foot modular
classroom donated by the Huron County Intermediate School
District. The HISD has made this building available for us if
we pay for moving it to the Center and have a foundation put
up. The Building, as shown to the left, has a 24'x36'
classroom, a beautiful reception area, offices and several
smaller classrooms. The first major use of the building
was on September 20, 2008 when over 200 people attended an
open house and 60 Friends of the Nature Center attended a Fall
Dinner and dedication of the building.
We still need heat,
a solar electric system, and water and septic systems for our
new building. We can currently use the building as an
interpretive center and gift shop during warmer months. If you
can help with finishing our building project, please let us
know!
If you would like to contribute
to our "Earth Friendly" building, please do so. We
can use all the help you are able to
provide.
