The Huron County Nature Center was founded in 1990. The Huron County Board of Commissioners established a 280 acre nature center in Hume Township on property owned by the County since 1941. This tract, includes the 120 acre wilderness arboretum, that has been under the care of the Huron County Women's Clubs for more than 50 years. In 1991 The Board had a master plan drawn up to direct the progress of the nature center into the future. The future is here as all phases of the master plan have been completed. We will be revising the Master Plan Soon. If you would like to review the original plan use the link below. We appreciate any comment you may have as to the future direct of The Huron County Nature Center. MASTER PLAN 1991 This file is over 5 meg as a PDF. You will need Acrobat 6 or higher to view it.

Wilderness Arboretum
A Wilderness Arboretum is a place where plants, birds, insects, mammals, fungi-all things living or dead-are protected for scientific and educational purposes and for preservation of natural conditions. This tract of alternating sand ridges and shallow swales is a haven for nature lovers and environmentalists. Enjoy a refreshing walk along one of the well kept trails in the nature center.

New Building! After years of planning the board of directors have announced that a new educational building is coming to the Huron County Nature Center. The building is a 2500 square foot modular classroom donated by the Huron County Intermediate School District. The HISD has made this building available for us if we pay for moving it to the Center and have a foundation put up. The Building, as shown below, has a 24'x36' classroom, a beautiful reception area, offices and several smaller classrooms. With the foundation complete, the building was placed at the nature center and we will be installing solar security and plans are underway to make our new building totally solar. If you would like to contribute to our "Earth Friendly" bulding, please do so. We can use all the help you are able to provide.
