The Huron County Nature Center
Environmental Education Program
Environmental education for all ages has been one of the Huron County Nature Center's
foremost objectives since its beginning as a Wilderness Arboretum in 1941. Each year, the
Nature Center continues to strive for educational excellence.
Ties are developed with local schools, scholl children are given
tours of the park and high school students conduct original research.
Nature walks are given, providing people with knowledge and
interesting information about the flora, fauna and geography of the Nature Center.
Special programs ranging from bird identification to edible
plants are held. New signage is developed, providing information for the casual visitor.
With limited funding, our educational goals are being met slowly
but surely. We encourage you to participate in self-education. You will find it extremely
rewarding to bring along a field guide and make your own discoveries.

EDUCATIONAL
COORDINATOR
REPORTS ON PROGRESS
At our March Board meeting, Bob
Tallman, Educational Coordinator for the Nature Center reported on his progress in setting
up educational programming that educators for county schools can use to help teach the
Michigan Educational Objectives.
Mr. Tallman plans to instruct the educators in the many
opportunities the Nature Center offers to them, as well as develop cost saving methods for
school districts to use in getting students to the center for nature experiences.
These programs will cover topics in History, Geography, Math,
Science, Literature, Art, etc. He will also establish training sessions to instruct
volunteers in the use of programs that are currently available, and to make programs
available to schools for highly effective and enjoyable visits to the Center.
Mr. Tallman will work with the Center for the next two years. He
is excited about the potential of the Huron County Nature Center, and delighted to help
provide opportunities for the students of the area that will benefit from their experience
at the Center. At the Board meeting he showed us several items we could build as tools in
the learning experience. These included a screen sieve and 1 meter square marking grid. It
is hoped that a volunteer will make and donate these items. We also will need some lab
equipment including microscopes, centrifuge and test tubes. He is looking into getting
these from local Hospitals who may have older equipment they could give us.
Watch for more information on this in upcoming editions of the
Newsletter.
We will be needing specific materials and equipment to accomplish
our goals and will be asking for gifts and/or donations to help cover the cost. Education
is one of the main objectives of your nature center. |
