Environmental Education Program
|
|
Environmental education for all ages has been one of the Huron County Nature Center's foremost objectives since its beginning as a Wilderness Arboretum in 1941. Each year, the Nature Center continues to strive for educational excellence. Ties are developed with local schools, school children are given tours of the park and high school students conduct original research. Nature walks are given, providing people with knowledge and interesting information about the flora, fauna and geography of the Nature Center. Special programs ranging from bird identification to edible plants are held. New signage is developed, providing information for the casual visitor. With limited funding, our educational goals are being met slowly but surely. We encourage you to participate in self-education. You will find it extremely rewarding to bring along a field guide and make your own discoveries.

Accessible To All Of Our Citizens
Because we want The Huron County Nature Center to be available to ALL of the Citizens of Huron County and Michigan, we have established a handicapped accessible trail. This paved trail through the beautiful wooded acres is dotted by bridges and observation decks. No matter what your physical condition, this trail is an enjoyable adventure in nature.

New Building!
After years of planning the board of directors have announced that a new educational building is coming to the Huron County Nature Center. The building is a 2500 square foot modular classroom donated by the Huron County Intermediate School District. The HISD has made this building available for us if we pay for moving it to the Center and have a foundation put up. The Building, as shown below, has a 24'x36' classroom, a beautiful reception area, offices and several smaller classrooms. With the foundation complete, the building was placed at the nature center and we will be installing solar security and plans are underway to make our new building totally solar. If you would like to contribute to our "Earth Friendly" bulding, please do so. We can use all the help you are able to provide.
