Lady’s Slipper Festival


Saturday & Sunday 10AM-12:00PM
Building Bird Houses. Let the kids build a bird house while you shop for arts and crafts. The bird houses may be taken home. There is no charge for the Bird House project, but we only ask that each attendee bring a food item for the Food Pantry in exchange for their own bird house to assemble and take home.
Saturday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM  Silent Auction.
• Artists selling their work along the trail and music to enjoy. Activities for all ages. The Lady’s Slippers are in bloom and summer fun is on it’s way. Enjoy food, fun and crafts along the trails of the Huron County Nature Center.
• The gift shop will be open in The Nature Center Building.
Sunday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

2009 Saturday Programs
(There is no charge for these programs. However, donations are accepted.)
May 30 - Saturday
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Hummingbird Program (movie and information) Guest speakers from area Garden Club on planning a hummingbird garden and speakers showing how to select and place bird feeders to attract hummingbirds to your yard. These exciting and beautiful birds are fun to watch.
June 13 - Saturday
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM : KidWalk Fun Day. Welcome to the trails. Guided tour of Nature Center with fun activities for Kids of all ages.
June 27 - Saturday
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM : Art In Nature for Kids of all ages Artistic projects based on the artistry to be found during a walk through the Nature Center.  Hosted by area artists.
July 11 - Saturday
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM : Nature Discovery with Jim McGrath - Program showcases snakes and other reptiles.
July 18 - Saturday
8:00 PM - 9:30 PM: (Tentative depending on sky conditions) Astronomical Society Evening Program at Oak Beach Park.
July 25 - Saturday
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM : Story Time with guest storytellers. “Reading about Nature can be Fun!”
August 1 - Saturday (Please not the time is incorrect in our poster and brochures. The correct time is listed here!)
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM:  Nature Discovery with Jim McGrath Jim will present another exciting program with live creatures found in Michigan. Always exciting, always fun. Don’t miss either of Jim McGraths programs.
August 8 - Saturday
2:00 PM -  4:00 PM : Bird Feeders you can build. FREE kits will be available for building. Learn about feeding birds and build a feeder you can take home and put in your back yard. (Cost for program is a food item for Food pantry. “Help to feed a neighbor”)
August 15 - Saturday
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Bats of the World program presented by the Cranbrook Bat Conservancy. See live bats and learn how important they are to nature. This is one of our most exciting programs. Don’t miss seeing the bats!
September 19 - Saturday
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM: Fall dinner with guest speaker. Great food and an exciting program, all in one evening!

Randy Baker Program on Michigan Wildlife


     Randy Baker has over 25 years of experience teaching natural history and history to people of all ages. As an ex-teacher and as a highly trained naturalist Randy understands what it takes to hold the attention of viewers that range from preschool children to post-graduate adults. Randy's highly energetic and professional style of presenting scientific and historical information has resulted in his receiving numerous state wide and national awards.
     Randy has worked with a wide variety of animals and has taken care of everything from deer to eagles and bobcat to bad tempered turtles. Randy has at one time or another caught everything from alligators to rattlesnakes, from armadillo to tarantulas and pretty much anything in between.
   It is his concern for quality combined with his 11 years of university training that produces these extraordinary presentations. Randy has been a favorite of The Huron County Nature Center for many years. Come and enjoy an exciting program. Information is from : www.michiganhistorylectures.com

Jim presented a great program for over 30 people. With live Michigan Salamanders we learned their life cycle, where we will find them and why they are often hard to find. Every program Jim and Carol present is always enjoyed by both kids and adults. Don't miss their next program!

Jim McGrath of Nature Discoveries Returns
with more “Creatures” for the kids to see
and touch.

The Michigan Wildlife Sampler format calls on Nature Discovery to choose which wildlife species to feature. 
   Since they are especially renowned for their live reptiles and amphibians, some of these are always incorporated into the presentation.  
   They also commonly choose an insect or other invertebrate, a bird, a mammal or a fish, and possibly a wild plant to highlight.

You never know what you will encounter when Jim and Carol McGraff present their Nature Discoveries program. But what you will do is enjoy one of our most popular programs ever, Have Fun and Learn!

"Bats of the World"
From Cranbrook science Center

Learn about and SEE bats. A popular program for kids and parents alike!
Step into the world of bats with a cultural, geographic perspective. Led by a bat researcher from the Organization for Bat Conservation, this exciting multimedia program features life insectivorous bats, vampire bats, and fruit bats with 4-foot wingspans. Topics address sound waves, ecosystems, food webs and conservation.

Sunset Astronomical Society presents a Star Gazing program at Oak Beach Park. This has been a very popular program. There will be telescopes set up and you will "See The Stars" and learn about the great Huron County night sky. Pat Ray, a teacher from Western High School in Saginaw will present this program.

Because we want The Huron County Nature Center to be available to ALL of the Citizens of Huron County and Michigan we have established a handicapped accessible trail. This paved trail through the beautiful wooded acres is dotted by bridges and observation decks. No matter what your physical condition, this trail is an enjoyable adventure in nature.
